Zuckerberg's Dinners with Girlfriend Help Spur Life-Saving Facebook Tool | ABC News Blogs - Yahoo!

Conversations over the dinner table with his med-student girlfriend helped Mark Zuckerberg formulate his latest big idea - harnessing the power of Facebook to help eliminate the critical shortage of organs for patients desperately in need of life-saving transplants.

And it was his friendship with Apple founder Steve Jobs, whose life was extended by years following a liver transplant, in part, that spurred the 27-year-old Facebook founder and CEO to help put that idea into practice.

"Facebook is really about communicating and telling stories… We think that people [...]

350,000 could lose Internet in July | KTVB.COM Boise

WASHINGTON -- For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the difference between staying online and losing Internet connections after early July.

The problem started when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual move, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system will be shut down this summer.

The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by a security partner that will inform them whether they're infected -- and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, [...]

Also tonight, see 'Self Portrait' (in progress) by Jason Kiefer.

We may not have audio again this week. (The studio is working on integrating some new equipment; thanks Nathan and Anthony! New equipment is always welcome and we're well aware that it's integration is rarely glitch-free. :) ) In anticipation of that, we are playing a different background than the one we've played the last two weeks. We will be sure to air any bands and artists who've been expecting airtime on the last two shows, and this one if it takes another week, and any future shows, once the audio issues have been addressed.

SAN DIEGO — On the night of Nov. 5, 2011, as midnight approached, a magnitude-5.6 earthquake rocked central Oklahoma, the state's most powerful quake ever recorded. The shaking injured two people, destroyed 14 homes, and bent a local stretch of highway.

Research presented here at the annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America today (April 18) suggests the quake could be related to an industrial practice of injecting fluids deep into the Earth.

A Satellite System That Could End Circling Above the Airport

SEATTLE — Capt. Mike Adams demonstrated what the future will look like at the nation’s airports as he pulled back on the throttles of his Boeing 737 flight simulator, setting the engines on idle to glide smoothly from his cruising altitude all the way down to the runway.

Starting in June, that’s exactly what actual Alaska Airlines flights will be doing when the airline begins testing the use of satellite technology to land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport — all in the hope of saving fuel and reducing delays.

Alaska Airlines, one of the nation’s smallest airlines, has taken some of the biggest [...]

Nokia Envisions Magnetic Tattoo to Feel Smartphone Vibrations | Haptic Feedback Technologies | LiveScience

Smartphone Haptic feedback
Figures from a Nokia patent filing showing how a magnetic tattto could transmit smartphone vibrations.

Today's best smartphones still can't alert human owners about an incoming call or text without either annoyingly loud rings or vibrations that can go unnoticed. That's why Nokia would let smartphone owners feel the vibrations on their skin through a magnetic tattoo.

The touch-based twist on cellphone alerts surfaced in a Nokia patent filing reported by UnwiredView.com. If the tattoo idea ever became reality, it could mean an end to the days when a silenced cellphone means missing calls and text messages during a movie or music concert. [...]

Something's rattling small Wisconsin town - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Mysterious explosions. Unexplained shaking. Something's going on in Clintonville, Wisconsin, but nobody seems to know what it is.

The sounds -- variously described as rattling pipes, clanging metal, thunder or firecrackers -- have continued on and off since early Sunday night in just one part of the small town of 4,600, located about 180 miles northeast of Madison.

Accompanying the sounds are vibrations that have shaken homes and household objects in the northeast corner of town, city manager Lisa Kuss said.

#StopKONY Now!!!

LONDON — Justin Bieber, the pop star, put it bluntly to his 18.3-million Twitter army: “SO glad you’re behind this! He MUST be stopped! THANK YOU for helping spread the word. POWER IS IN NUMBERS. #STOPKONY.”

Yes, as u MUST know by now — unless u live on another planet!! — a 30-minute video uploaded to YouTube on March 5 by the advocacy group Invisible Children designed to rally global support for the arrest of Joseph Kony, a Ugandan war criminal, has gone viral, with 71 million views on YouTube as I write and no doubt MILLIONS more by the time u read this.

Kony is the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (L.R.A.), which started operations in northern Uganda more than two decades ago, kidnapping children by the thousands, turning some into sex slaves and brutalizing the civilian population. He’s top of the International Criminal Court’s most-wanted list.

But this just in: RT button and #hashtags apparently operating with 10-year delay. And esp this: the celebs of the California-based White Savior Industrial Complex are terrible reporters. I mean, rly.

YouTube Finds a Way Off Schools’ Banned List

Educators are giving YouTube — long dismissed as a storehouse of whimsical, time-wasting and occasionally distasteful videos — another look. As Google, YouTube’s parent company, fine-tunes a portal that lets schools limit students’ access to selected content, the video-sharing Web site is gaining popularity as a trove of free educational materials.

Schools across the country commonly block access to YouTube, shielding students from the irresistible distractions of, say, the cat in a T-shirt playing a piano, or worse. So in December, Google started YouTube for Schools, offering schools the ability to pluck only the videos they want, scrubbed of all comments and linked only to other [...]

Why We Use Beaver as Bait. | Scotchman Peaks Wilderness

This was originally posted as a response to a blog comment that expressed concern over our use of trapped beaver as bait for our camera stations.  The comment also questioned the need for the project and our decision to study wolverines.  We hope that this response will adequately address these issues and provide a greater insight on why we do what we do.

***********

We understand and appreciate the frustration with our use of beaver as the preferred bait species for the rare forest carnivore study. They have been historically overharvested for their pelts and castor, and there have been many struggles in rebuilding a stable beaver population in our region.  As wilderness advocates, we [...]

Interesting points on hunting/trapping, conservation, and roadkill reclamation (plus, wolverines are cool; there was one at the bottom of RCR a couple months ago, trundlin' around just off the road in the middle of the night, big fella - or gal I s'pose, not gonna try to find out :D - and gorgeous). While you're there, check out the rest of the FSPW site and consider donating if it seems like a worthwhile cause and if you've got a little somethin' to give.
